Nina
Nina sat still on the couch and looked at the tree outside the living room window of her apartment. âHere we go, one, two, three.â She flinched when Daniel peeled the dressing off her shoulder wound. âItâs almost completely healed,â he said. It had been two days since sheâd been released from the W.I.S.E. infirmary, and campus was closed until the various investigations were underway and the team regrouped. She held still while Daniel cleaned the nearly-closed-up gash in her leg and bite on her shoulder and let him re-wrap them.
âIâd really like it if youâd eat something.â He reached behind him and picked up the cooling tea sheâd set on an end table.
She pointed to the manila envelope sheâd just noticed on the other end of the couch. âDid Miri leave that?â She had fallen asleep during Miriamâs visit.
He nodded. âThatâs for us. Itâs the documents you asked Abioye to get for you.â She reached for it. Daniel grabbed it and held it away from her. âYou havenât had proper nourishment in three days. You canât live on tea and single-serving containers of yogurt.â Daniel was frowning. âIâm worried about you. Besides, you canât focus if youâre starving.â
Nina tried to smile. âShould I consider this behavior as normal, and resign myself to it for the rest of our lives?â
âI am my Jewish motherâs child, after all. Be glad Iâm not forcing her matzo ball soup on you. That stuff sat like a rock in your stomach for a whole week.â He smiled. âWhat I do have is that spinach paneer thing you like from the curry place. I asked Miriam to bring it along for you.â
Nina sighed. âYou win. Youâre right.â She let Daniel pull her up off the couch. She interlaced her fingers behind his neck and looked at him. There was tension in his brow, and he had circles under his eyes.
âYes, fiancé?â He ducked his head down and kissed her.
